New Zealand Memory Game
This memory game will help children to explore and identify New Zealand birds, wildlife and flora in a fun and engaging way. Every player must try to remember where all the different images are as they each turn a tile over to find the matching pairs. The winner is the player with the most pairs. This game also helps develop visual spatial memory, gross motor skills and cooperative play.
Recommended age 3+. Includes 20 wooden pieces, each approx. 4 x 4cm. Made with 3mm sustainable plywood and comes in a linen drawstring bag.
Every piece of wood used is slightly different in colour, texture and grain with naturally occurring imperfections seen in the timber (e.g knots, colour changes, etc). These pieces of timber are cut on an engraver and will have slight burnt marks on the edges on some sides. The best way to keep these raw timber resources hydrated and well-nourished is with a natural oil or wax, like beeswax polish.
EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS
Individual
A great tool for open ended discussions about the birds, wildlife and flora featured. Place a set of cards face down on a stack. Turn over the top card, see if the child can name or describe the image they see.
Group Setting
Spread out the cards face up. Have children take turns to visually choose a card but don't tell the other players what they have chosen. The child describes the card they chose, and the other players can guess which card it is. Or play the traditional way by taking turns at turning over two cards and trying to make a match.
Outdoors
Take the children outside to discuss the tiles, use the pieces to evoke imaginative and pretend play. Can you fly like a Red Admiral? Can you crawl like a Tuatara?
Learning Opportunities
Memory encourages social play, turn taking skills, listening and language skills.
