Wooden Magnets Set – New Zealand
A selection of NZ native animals, insects, flora and fauna feature on this awesome set of wooden discs that can be used in a variety of ways. The magnets are attached to the back to decorate any magnetised surface. These colourfully printed discs with realistic images are a versatile learning tool to assist children with discovering and identifying these icons of Kiwiana.
Recommended age 3+. Includes 28 wooden pieces, each approx. 7 x 6cm. Made with 3mm sustainable plywood and comes in a linen drawstring bag.
Every piece of wood used is slightly different in colour, texture and grain with naturally occurring imperfections seen in the timber (e.g knots, colour changes, etc). These pieces of timber are cut on an engraver and will have slight burnt marks on the edges on some sides. The best way to keep these raw timber resources hydrated and well-nourished is with a natural oil or wax, like beeswax polish.
EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS
Individual
Set up magnetic boards for children to design and create. Get child to see what surfaces they stick to around their environment and discuss each image when it is used. Separate into birds, sealife, insects, plants etc, encouraging further knowledge of each, as well as understanding their habitats.
Group Setting
Talk to the children about what image they are holding, as well as the colours on the disc. Hide each disc around the room giving clues as to what image it might be, helping them to learn through play.
Outdoors
Take outdoors to see what surfaces they stick too, turn it into a science experiment! Make it into a physical experience by having the children describe the animal, insect or plant they find.
Learning Opportunities
Fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. As the child puts magnets on various surfaces they are learning about spatial awareness. Language skills, cognitive and problem solving, maybe the magnet is too heavy? Maybe the surface is not metal? Magnetic play also encourages creativity.
